Seafarers should not be allowed to get caught up in the crisis of political refugees or economic migrants, according to the UK Chamber of Shipping.
Speaking a day after news broke about the hijacking of the Nave Andromeda in the Solent, the UK Chamber said it was heartening to see the UK authorities take swift action to safeguard ship and crew.
Seven suspects were detained by UK special forces after a suspected hijacking involving stowaways on the tanker off the Isle of Wight. UK Special forces completed the operation in nine minutes, press reports suggested.
Military assistance had been requested after the stowaways onboard the Liberian-registered Nave Andromeda reportedly became violent.
All 22 crew members, who were locked in the ship’s citadel, are safe.
The Ministry of Defence called the incident a ‘suspected hijacking’ and said Defence Secretary Ben Wallace and Home Secretary Priti Patel authorised the operation in response to a police request
